1-18-07

Members present were Bill Gilmer * Beth Gilmer * Kate McDaniel * Matt Alexander * David Kilpatrick * Vinnie Williams, Jeff Benko * Ed Kennedy * Jim Alexander * David Williams * Don Walter * John Roberts.

Members Absent were Rev Larry Davison * Bob Smith * Bubber Wilkes * Michael Ginn.

Vice Chairman Bill Gilmer called the meeting to order at 7:16 pm in the unpreventable absence of Chairman Davison. A discussion ensued about the lack of publicity by the news media. Miss Vinnie, Publisher of the Oconee Enterprise made the comment that she will make space for any articles written in reference to the Committee and it’s fundraising for the memorial. This effort to raise funds to build the memorial is very dear to her and she in support 100%. Just send the info to her at the OE Office.

Notice was made that a few members were absent. All members are needed at meetings to accomplish the goal. Discussion followed about what to do when members miss meetings. Should nothing be done, 3 strikes you’re out or a warning of any missed meeting? Ed Kennedy made a motion that the Committee adopt a policy for 3 strikes you’re out, but after further discussion, withdrew his motion.

Jim Alexander, Publicity Sub-Committee member, introduced his design of the raffle tickets for a limited edition painting of “God Shed His Grace On Thee” which appears on each ticket. The actual painting measures 25” by 31” and was signed by 25 distinguished WWII Veterans. The painting was donated to the Committee as a fund raiser by a Veteran who wished to remain anonymous. It will be raffled on July 4, 2007. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 or 12 for $10. Everyone was pleased with the design.

Beth Gilmer, Chairman of the Fundraising Sub-Committee took the master ticket design to have 600 tickets printed and ready for sale by the next scheduled meeting in February.

Jeff Benko will clear the way for the painting to be displayed in the lobby of the Court House. Tickets will be sold by the Foundation Committee members.

It was generally decided that we would not take from the treasury (checking account) to finance our fundraiser if at all possible. An exception might some big item fundraiser such as a Dine & Dance event at the Civic Center.

Members discussed the possibility of a large fundraiser such as a Dine & Dance with about 50 to 75 invited guests. Comments were made about having such an event at the Georgia Club which is located in Barrow County, but some members believed that any such event should be held at an Oconee County facility – the Civic Center being large enough to accommodate large crowds.

Jeff Benko suggested that about 3 months would be needed to plan such an event and that he would contact the Oconee Chamber for names and addresses of Oconee businesses as the invitation list. A spring date – sometime in April was suggested as a target date.

John Roberts suggested that Capt John Gentry be invited to join the Foundation Committee. The membership agreed

Chairman Gilmer requested a treasury report from Treasurer Matt Alexander which follows:

North Georgia Bank – CD: $20,000 @ 5.50%
Oconee State Bank - CD: $20,000 @ 5.50%
Checking Acct: $13,210.30

Total: $53,210.30

Since 11/15/06 (after the Memorial ground breaking) $7,765.00 has been donated.
