Veterans Memorial Foundation Donation - 10-17-07
Large Donation from the County's Oldest Bank - Oconee State Bank
October 17, 2007
Amrey Harden, President of Oconee State Bank and in the name of the bank donated the sum of $5,000 to the Foundation this week. He had said all along that the bank would make a significant donation but was waiting to see how the funds were coming in.
And he detected that the Foundation needs help now to perhaps move others in the community to contribute. Or perhaps it was the life given recently by a brave soilder from Oconee County that moved him to act.
Joshua Reeves, a young man from Oconee serving on active duty was killed just hours after the birth of his first child - a son. Such an aspiring young life sacraficed for the freedoms that we all enjoy.
The Foundation has received to date approximately $54,000 plus the $5,000 and depending on the cost of materials, needs about $100,000 to build a a memorial (see above - this page) befitting for those who have left our community to serve and protect our freedoms. At least $40,000 more is needed.
Co-Chairman, Bill Gilmer accepted the bank contribution in the absence of Chairman Rev Larry Davison who had a conflict. He was excited and promised to contact the entities that pay the largest amount of sales tax in the county for a donation. They are probably just waiting to be asked.
The Committee continues to plan to sell bricks that will constitute the area around the memorial and a walkway. They will sell for $100 and can be purchased by contacting the secretary with the donation and information to be subscribed on the brick.
